Trending Global Challenges & Their Example Solutions

The world faces numerous interconnected challenges that demand innovative solutions. We have identified 22 critical areas where passionate individuals and local communities can make a significant difference. Your project should focus on addressing one of the following global challenges:

1. Challenge: Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability

Sustainability sounds like a global issue, but real change must begin locally (Forbes). The 2025 California wildfire, which burned over 40,500 acres, showed this clearly. Its impact spread beyond California, air quality dropped in nearby states, and supply chains suffered. Global thinking matters, but strong local action makes the biggest difference.

So, this issue encompasses a wide range of interconnected issues threatening the planet’s health, including rising global temperatures leading to extreme weather events (heatwaves, floods, droughts), sea-level rise impacting coastal communities, deforestation causing habitat loss and reduced carbon sequestration, and various forms of pollution (plastic, air, water) harming ecosystems and human health. The decline in biodiversity further weakens the resilience of natural systems.

Measurement Model:

  • Goal: Implement a recycling program targeting 5,000 kg of plastic waste reduction.
  • Criteria: Quantified recycling output, community involvement, and monthly data reporting.
  • Milestones: Program design → implementation → reporting & impact review.

Example Solutions:

  • Community-driven reforestation and afforestation projects.
  • Implementing and promoting community-wide recycling programs to reduce plastic waste.
  • Educating and supporting local farmers in adopting sustainable farming practices (e.g., no-till farming, crop rotation, organic methods).
  • Facilitating the adoption of clean energy solutions at the local level (e.g., community solar projects).

2. Challenge: Artificial Intelligence for Good

Do you know the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) across industries has sparked workforce anxiety, as employees express concerns about ethical use, legal risks, and potential job loss, according to new data from Ernst & Young LLP (EY US)?

While AI offers immense potential for solving global challenges, its development and deployment must be guided by ethical frameworks to prevent misuse and address biases. Recognizing the emerging challenge of AI anxiety, it’s crucial to foster AI readiness and focus on the positive applications of this technology: AI usage for good. This involves equipping individuals and communities with the knowledge and skills to navigate and leverage AI effectively for societal benefit.
