An educator for more than 20 years, Dr. Heather Fahnestock is the founder and director of Waterview Learning Academy in Wilmington, North Carolina — an alternative school built to give students a genuine departure from the conventional classroom.
Thirteen years ago, Heather began reimagining what education could look like by founding Waterview Learning Academy, introducing a holistic, project-based learning approach that challenged conventional educational paradigms. Her leadership established a framework where students previously labeled "certificate-only graduates" discovered their academic potential and thrived.
Her curriculum development emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application of knowledge — preparing students not just for tests, but for meaningful contributions to society. The academy's holistic, project-based model has achieved a perfect graduation rate, empowering students previously considered limited in their academic potential, including many neurodivergent learners.
At the heart of Waterview Learning Academy is Heather's vision of holistic development — academic excellence complemented by emotional intelligence, mental health support, and a love of lifelong learning. She believes in equipping students with the tools they need not only to succeed academically, but to thrive as well-rounded individuals in a rapidly evolving world. As she puts it: "I see you. I value all of you."
Heather's impact now extends well beyond her local community, with her educational model gaining international recognition through collaborations with academic leaders who adapt her curriculum in their own settings. In June 2024, she received the International Influential Leadership Award in Education, and in 2025 she was honored with a Global Recognition Award for her leadership vision, teaching innovation, and global educational impact.
